02/04/2013 – Dr Francois Pretorius
on moving from rural to metro GP after an exhausting experience in rural SA
Francois is an experienced South African proceduralist, who has worked on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, then in rural NSW, regional Victoria and most recently almost 18 months as a solo doctor in Penola, South Australia. Unfortunately he was not well looked after by the State Health Department and has made the move to coastal Queensland, for the benefit of his own health and that of his family. Read more about “How Penola GP Dr Francois Pretorius was pushed to the edge” and more from local Penola newspaper “Wattle Range Now“.
I really enjoyed this chat with Francois, particularly his passion for rural med and willingness to embrace SoMe and FOAMed now that he has time on his hands! It was also interesting to hear the backstory of Penola and shenanigans with the Health Department (after the podcast was finished!) Sadly the audio quality was sub-optimal – but see what you think. If popular, we will see if we can get him back on the show later…
